BookFriends

BookFriends is the Beekley Community Library’s “community connection.” Founded in the summer of 1998, BookFriends is made up of local volunteers who are dedicated to supporting the Library by: developing programs and activities that promote a strong, positive relationship between the Community and the Library, raising funds to benefit the Library, and  providing support services for the operation and maintenance of the Library.

How can YOU help? Join BookFriends and the 80+ other Library volunteers! It’s free!!!! Membership forms are at the Front Desk in the Library and are accessible on this Website. Let us know in what way you would like to support the Library for the year and how we can contact you to do so! If you are already a member, renew your membership annually, so that we know your current Library-volunteer interests, and contact information.

What You Can Do

Once a member, you can help with BookFriends activities and “library-awareness” events. Examples:

  • New Hartford Day (September):  Assisting the Library Staff and Library Board Members by helping with set-up, activity, and clean-up needs for this wonderful, all-town event at Brodie Park
  • Light New Hartford (early December): Helping to decorate the Library and to serve refreshments
  • Developing new ideas for connecting the Community with the Library and the Library with the Community!
BookFriends fundraising activities. Examples:

  • Used Book Sale (June): Organizing and selling items for our biggest fundraising event of the year. Volunteers are needed for sorting (January to June), set-up and “take-down,” [sale-item] transportation, and sales.
  • Bake Sale (June): Baking for, setting up, and selling Baked Items at the Used Book Sale [Yum!!]
  • Holiday Marketplace (early December): Partnering with the New Hartford Business Council, assisting with set-up of auction tables and items, selling silent auction tickets, serving refreshments provided by the Business Council
  • Developing new ideas for great fundraising events and activities to benefit the Library
BookFriends supportive services to the staff, Library events, and Library-building/facility needs. Examples:

  • Children's programming  - assisting the Library staff with special events
  • Book deliveries – delivering books to town residents who are unable to access the Library
  • Shelf-reading and/or looking for Overdue books – assisting with keeping the Library’s shelves in good order; and/or periodically assisting the Library staff by screening the shelves in search of books that are listed as “overdue,” but which may have found their way back on the shelves without being checked in.
  • Garden Committee - We are so blessed to have such beautiful gardens at our Library! Thanks to Evelyn Betz and her committee who help to keep our “landscape” so well-known!
  • Hospitality Committee –Baked goods, wine, and cheese…this is what makes for a fun Library or BookFriends event for everyone! We need volunteers to make, serve, and clean up!
  • Publicity Committee – Help publicize BookFriends events by designing/creating posters, signs, flyers, and other advertising tools!
